  • Inoculate

Inject the included Turkey Tail liquid culture into the pre-sterilised grow bag through the self-healing injection port.

  • Incubate

Keep the inoculated bag somewhere clean and comfortably warm while the Turkey Tail mycelium spreads through the grain and substrate.

  • Fruiting

Once fully colonised, cut the fruiting area as directed, move the bag into humid conditions with indirect light and fresh air, then mist regularly while the layered Turkey Tail brackets develop.

Get Multiple Harvests From One Block

Turkey Tail often develops in dense layered clusters across the fruiting area rather than producing a single large mushroom. After your first harvest, rehydrate the block and return it to fruiting conditions.

Typically 500–800g of fresh Turkey Tail mushrooms from one kit over multiple flushes, with up to 1kg+ possible in ideal conditions.

Why Grow Turkey Tail Mushrooms?

Turkey Tail is one of the most recognisable woodland mushrooms in the world. Its name comes from the beautiful layered brackets, which feature natural bands of brown, tan, cream, rust and muted grey-blue shades resembling the tail feathers of a wild turkey.

Unlike soft gourmet mushrooms grown for pan-frying, Turkey Tail is a tougher bracket mushroom most appreciated for its appearance, fascinating growth pattern and long history in traditional mushroom preparation.

  • A Truly Beautiful Mushroom

Turkey Tail develops as overlapping fan-shaped brackets, with detailed colour bands and velvety textures that make every cluster unique.

  • Fascinating To Grow At Home

Watch your grow bag transform into a dense cluster of layered woodland-style mushrooms. It is a rewarding project for mushroom lovers, curious beginners and anyone interested in mycology.

  • A Classic Woodland Species

Turkey Tail is commonly found growing on dead hardwood in forests across the UK and beyond. Growing it at home gives you a close-up look at one of nature’s most distinctive fungi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this kit suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The bag arrives pre-sterilised and ready to inoculate, so you do not need a pressure cooker, specialist equipment or previous mushroom-growing experience.

Turkey Tail is a rewarding species for beginners, although it needs more patience than fast-growing oyster mushrooms.

What exactly is included?

Each kit includes a pre-sterilised all-in-one grow bag, a 10ml Turkey Tail liquid culture syringe, sterile needle, alcohol swab and clear step-by-step instructions.

Do I need any extra equipment?

You only need a clean area to inoculate the bag, a suitable place for colonisation and a spray bottle for the fruiting stage. Everything else is included.

How long until I can grow Turkey Tail mushrooms?

Turkey Tail is generally slower growing than oyster mushrooms. Most growers should allow around 8–12 weeks from inoculation to the first developed brackets, depending on temperature, humidity and growing conditions.

What temperature does Turkey Tail need?

During colonisation, keep the bag somewhere clean and comfortably warm, ideally around 20–24°C.

Once fully colonised, Turkey Tail fruits best in cooler, humid conditions. Aim for roughly 16–22°C with indirect light, good humidity and regular fresh air exchange.

Can I grow this in my kitchen, bedroom or flat?

Yes, provided you have somewhere suitable for fruiting. A bright room away from direct sunlight can work well, as long as you can maintain humidity with regular misting and provide fresh air.

What do I need to do after the bag arrives?

Keep the bag sealed until you are ready to inoculate. Wipe the injection port with the alcohol swab, inject the included liquid culture, then place the bag somewhere clean and suitable while the mycelium grows through the substrate.

How will I know when it is ready to fruit?

The bag is ready once the substrate has turned mostly white with healthy Turkey Tail mycelium. At that point, follow the included instructions to cut the fruiting area, move it into a humid space with indirect light and begin misting.

Can I get more than one harvest?

Yes. Your first flush is usually the largest, but the block can often produce additional smaller flushes. After harvesting, rehydrate the block and return it to fruiting conditions.

How much will I grow?

Turkey Tail produces lighter, layered bracket clusters rather than heavy fleshy mushrooms, so yields vary more than with oyster species. Your results will depend on humidity, fresh air, temperature and ongoing care.

Why does this kit use a liquid culture syringe?

Liquid culture gives you a simple way to start growing without needing to prepare grain spawn yourself. The syringe injects directly through the bag’s self-healing injection port, helping keep the process clean and straightforward.
