How It Works
-
Inoculate
Inject the included White Elm Oyster liquid culture into the pre-sterilised grow bag through the self-healing injection port.
-
Incubate
Keep the inoculated bag somewhere clean and warm while the White Elm Oyster mycelium spreads through the grain and substrate.
-
Fruiting
Once colonised, start fruiting by cutting slits in the bag as directed, allow fresh air exchange and light misting until pins and mushrooms develop.
Get Multiple Harvests From One Block
After your first flush, rehydrate the block and return it to fruiting conditions. With a little care, it can keep producing fresh White Elm Oyster mushrooms, giving you more from every grow.
Typically 500–800g of fresh White Elm Oyster mushrooms from one kit over multiple flushes, with up to 1kg+ possible in ideal conditions.
Why Grow White Elm Oyster Mushrooms?
White Elm Oysters are a distinctive gourmet mushroom with broad creamy-white caps, thick pale stems and a satisfyingly firm texture. Often called an “elm oyster”, they are a separate species from true Pleurotus oyster mushrooms, known as Hypsizygus ulmarius.
They have a mild savoury flavour and substantial bite that makes them especially good for slicing, pan-frying, grilling and roasting.
-
Big, Satisfying Mushrooms
White Elm Oysters develop fuller caps and thicker stems than many oyster varieties, creating an impressive gourmet harvest with plenty of texture.
-
Brilliant For Cooking
White Elm Oysters have a mild, savoury flavour that works beautifully in pasta, stir-fries, risotto, ramen, soups, tacos and roasted mushroom dishes.
-
Firm, Meaty Texture
Their satisfying texture holds up brilliantly in cooking. Slice them into thick pieces, score the stems, then pan-fry until golden and caramelised.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this kit suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. The bag arrives pre-sterilised and ready to inoculate, so you do not need a pressure cooker, specialist equipment or previous mushroom-growing experience. White Elm Oysters are straightforward to grow, but they do need cooler fruiting conditions than Phoenix or Pink Oysters.
What exactly is included?
Each kit includes a pre-sterilised all-in-one grow bag, a 10ml White Elm Oyster liquid culture syringe, sterile needle, alcohol swab and clear step-by-step instructions.
Do I need any extra equipment?
You only need a clean area to inoculate the bag, a suitable place for colonisation and a spray bottle for the fruiting stage. Everything else is included.
How long until I can harvest White Elm Oyster mushrooms?
Most growers can expect their first harvest in around 4–6 weeks from inoculation, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
What temperature does White Elm Oyster need?
During colonisation, keep your bag somewhere clean and comfortably warm, ideally around 20–24°C.
Once fully colonised, White Elm Oysters need a noticeably cooler fruiting period. Aim for around 10–18°C, with 13–18°C ideal once pins have formed. A cool garage, utility room, porch or unheated spare room can work well. Cooler conditions are an important trigger for reliable pinning with this species
Can I grow this in my kitchen, bedroom or flat?
You can, provided you have a cool enough area for fruiting. White Elm Oysters are not the best choice for a consistently warm kitchen or bedroom, especially during summer. A cooler room or sheltered outdoor space is usually more suitable.
What do I need to do after the bag arrives?
Keep the bag sealed until you are ready to inoculate. Wipe the injection port with the alcohol swab, inject the included liquid culture, then place the bag somewhere clean and suitable while the mycelium grows through the substrate.
How will I know when it is ready to fruit?
The bag is ready once the substrate has turned mostly white with healthy White Elm Oyster mycelium. At that point, follow the included instructions to cut the fruiting area, move it somewhere cool with indirect light and begin misting.
Why are my mushrooms growing with long stems or small caps?
This usually means they need more fresh air. Increase airflow around the fruiting area while keeping the surface lightly misted and humid.
Can I get more than one harvest?
Yes. Your first flush is usually the largest, but the block can often produce additional smaller flushes. After harvesting, rehydrate the block and return it to fruiting conditions.
How much will I grow?
Yields vary depending on temperature, humidity, fresh air and care. Your first flush is usually the largest, with further smaller harvests possible from the same block.
What do White Elm Oyster mushrooms taste like?
White Elm Oysters have a mild savoury flavour with a firmer, meatier texture than many soft oyster varieties. They are especially good sliced and pan-fried until golden, then added to pasta, stir-fries, risotto, ramen, soups or tacos.
Why does this kit use a liquid culture syringe?
Liquid culture gives you a simple way to start growing without needing to prepare grain spawn yourself. The syringe injects directly through the bag’s self-healing injection port, helping keep the process clean and straightforward.
