  • Inoculate

Inject the included Shiitake liquid culture into the pre-sterilised grow bag through the self-healing injection port.

  • Incubate

Keep the inoculated bag somewhere clean, dark and consistently warm while the Shiitake mycelium spreads through the rye grain and Master’s Mix substrate.

  • Fruiting

Once colonised, start fruiting by cutting slits in the bag as directed, allow fresh air exchange and light misting until pins and mushrooms develop.

Get Multiple Harvests From One Block

After your first harvest, rest and rehydrate the block as directed before returning it to fruiting conditions. With a little care, your block can produce additional flushes, giving you more fresh Shiitake mushrooms from one grow kit.

Typically 500–800g of fresh Shiitake mushrooms from one kit over multiple flushes, with up to 1kg+ possible in ideal conditions.

Why Grow Shiitake Mushrooms?

Shiitake are one of the world’s best-known gourmet mushrooms. They produce attractive chestnut-brown caps, firm pale stems and a deep, savoury umami flavour that makes them a staple in Asian-inspired cooking and everyday meals.

They have a satisfying, meaty texture that works brilliantly in ramen, stir-fries, risotto, pasta, soups, sauces, noodle dishes and crispy pan-fried mushroom recipes.

  • Rich Umami Flavour

Shiitake have a deep, savoury flavour that adds serious depth to broths, sauces, stir-fries and noodle dishes.

  • Firm, Meaty Texture

Their substantial texture holds up well when sliced, roasted, grilled or pan-fried until golden.

  • A Classic Gourmet Mushroom

Growing your own Shiitake is a rewarding home-grow project, producing beautiful brown-capped mushrooms that look as good as they taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this kit suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The bag arrives pre-sterilised and ready to inoculate, so you do not need a pressure cooker, specialist equipment or previous mushroom-growing experience. Shiitake simply requires more patience than faster oyster varieties.

What exactly is included?

Each kit includes a pre-sterilised all-in-one grow bag, a 10ml Shiitake liquid culture syringe, sterile needle, alcohol swab and clear step-by-step instructions.

Do I need any extra equipment?

You only need a clean area to inoculate the bag, a suitable place for colonisation and a spray bottle for the fruiting stage. Everything else is included.

How long until I can harvest Shiitake mushrooms?

Shiitake generally takes longer than oyster mushrooms because the fully colonised block needs an additional maturation stage before fruiting. Expect around 8–12 weeks from inoculation in suitable conditions, although timing varies by temperature and strain. Shiitake blocks are commonly left to mature for roughly six to seven weeks before being moved into fruiting conditions.

What temperature does Shiitake need?

During colonisation, keep your bag somewhere clean and consistently warm, ideally around 20–24°C.

Once the block has matured, move it into cooler fruiting conditions. Aim for around 12–18°C, with high humidity, indirect light and good fresh air exchange. Shiitake pinning is commonly supported by cooler temperatures and high humidity.

Can I grow this in my kitchen, bedroom or flat?

Yes, as long as you have a suitable place for both stages. A warm cupboard or spare room can work well for incubation, while a cooler bright room, utility room or sheltered garage area may be better for fruiting.

What do I need to do after the bag arrives?

Keep the bag sealed until you are ready to inoculate. Wipe the injection port with the alcohol swab, inject the included liquid culture, then place the bag somewhere clean and warm while the mycelium grows through the substrate.

How will I know when it is ready to fruit?

The substrate should first become fully colonised with healthy white mycelium. Shiitake then needs time to mature, often developing a firmer, more established surface before fruiting. Follow the included instructions rather than fruiting the bag immediately after it turns white. Temperature drops and physical disturbance can trigger Shiitake to fruit too early, before the block has fully matured.

Why are my mushrooms growing with long stems or small caps?

This usually means they need more fresh air. Increase airflow around the fruiting area while maintaining humidity and avoiding direct sunlight.

Can I get more than one harvest?

Yes. The first flush is often the largest, but the block can produce additional smaller flushes after resting and rehydrating.

How much will I grow?

Yields vary depending on temperature, humidity, fresh air and care. Your first flush is usually the largest, with further smaller harvests possible from the same block.

What do Shiitake mushrooms taste like?

Shiitake have a rich, savoury umami flavour and firm, meaty texture. They are especially good pan-fried until golden, then added to ramen, stir-fries, pasta, risotto, soups, sauces and noodle dishes.

Why does this kit use a liquid culture syringe?

Liquid culture gives you a simple way to start growing without needing to prepare grain spawn yourself. The syringe injects directly through the bag’s self-healing injection port, helping keep the process clean and straightforward.
