A mushroom grow kit may appear to stop growing for several different reasons.

The first step is identifying which stage the kit has reached.

A complete kit beginning with liquid culture must pass through inoculation, colonisation, mixing and consolidation before mushrooms can form. A ready-to-fruit block has already completed those stages and normally only needs suitable fruiting conditions.

Most apparent problems fall into one of five categories:

  • The mycelium is developing more slowly than expected
  • The growing temperature is unsuitable
  • The fruiting area is too dry
  • The mushrooms need more fresh air
  • The bag or block has become contaminated

Do not make several major changes at once.

Moving the kit, adding large amounts of water, cutting additional holes and changing the temperature simultaneously can make the original problem harder to identify.

Instead:

  1. Confirm which growing stage you are at.
  2. Compare the kit with the normal signs for that stage.
  3. Check the temperature.
  4. Check for drying or excess moisture.
  5. Check whether the fruiting area receives fresh air.
  6. Photograph the bag before changing anything.
  7. Contact the supplier when contamination or product failure is suspected.

Mushrooms require a balance of temperature, humidity, indirect light and airflow during fruiting. Increasing one factor without considering the others can create a new problem.

A ready-to-fruit block has already been inoculated and colonised.

The grower normally:

  1. Creates the instructed opening
  2. Provides humidity
  3. Allows fresh-air exchange
  4. Provides indirect light
  5. Watches for pins
  6. Harvests the mushrooms

When a ready-to-fruit block is not producing mushrooms, concentrate on:

  • Block condition
  • Fruiting temperature
  • Humidity
  • Fresh air
  • Light
  • The position and size of the fruiting opening

Complete mushroom kit not growing

No mycelium is visible after inoculation

Mushroom culture does not always produce visible white growth immediately.

During the first stage, the mycelium needs to:

  • Recover from handling
  • Establish itself in the grain
  • Begin expanding from the injection area
  • Produce enough growth to become visible through the bag

Early growth may appear as:

  • Fine white threads
  • Small white patches
  • Wispy material around individual grains
  • Cotton-like growth near the injection point

The first growth may also begin in a part of the bag that is difficult to see.

What to check

Ask:

  • How many days have passed since inoculation?
  • Is the room suitable for the selected species?
  • Has the bag been exposed to cold conditions?
  • Was the liquid culture injected into the grain area?
  • Is the bag being moved and squeezed repeatedly?
  • Are there signs of green, black or slimy growth?
  • Does the bag have a strong unpleasant smell?

Avoid opening the bag to inspect it.

The contents were sterilised and should remain sealed during colonisation.

What to do

  • Keep the bag somewhere clean and stable
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Avoid radiators and fan heaters
  • Check the temperature close to the bag
  • Leave it undisturbed
  • Take a photograph and compare again after several days

Mycelium needs to establish healthy growth through the substrate before it can support fruiting mushrooms.


The mycelium is growing very slowly

Slow growth does not automatically mean the kit has failed.

Possible causes include:

  • Cool room temperature
  • Normal species variation
  • A slow-growing mushroom species
  • Culture recovering after inoculation
  • The bag being disturbed repeatedly
  • Temperature fluctuations
  • Growth occurring inside the substrate where it cannot yet be seen

Oyster mushrooms generally colonise more quickly than Shiitake.

Shiitake also requires a separate maturation stage after colonisation, making its overall timeline longer.

What to do

Keep the kit within the temperature range provided for the selected species.

Do not place the bag directly on:

  • A radiator
  • A boiler
  • A hot-water tank
  • Heated flooring
  • A computer or appliance producing heat

A room that is slightly cooler but stable is usually safer than a location that repeatedly becomes very hot.

The bag looked white before mixing but now looks uncolonised

This is normally expected.

Mixing breaks the colonised grain into smaller pieces and distributes it through the remaining substrate.

Immediately afterwards:

  • White areas appear to disappear
  • The substrate looks loose again
  • Mycelium is spread throughout the bag
  • The bag may appear less developed than before mixing

The mycelium now needs time to recover and reconnect.

What to do

  • Shape the bag according to the instructions
  • Return it to its incubation location
  • Avoid mixing it again
  • Avoid constantly squeezing it
  • Allow new growth to become visible

Repeated mixing can damage the recovering mycelium and extend the colonisation period.


The bag has not recovered after mixing

Recovery time varies by species and temperature.

Possible reasons for slow recovery include:

  • Mixing before enough grain was colonised
  • Cool conditions
  • Repeated handling
  • An overly compacted bag
  • A culture that was already weak
  • Contamination
  • Natural variation

Healthy recovery signs

Look for:

  • New white patches forming
  • White growth spreading from multiple points
  • The substrate gradually binding together
  • A normal earthy or mushroom-like appearance
  • No rapidly spreading coloured mould

Warning signs

Contact support when you see:

  • Rapidly spreading green growth
  • Black growth
  • Strong sour odour
  • Rotten smell
  • Slimy uncolonised areas
  • Large amounts of unusual liquid
  • No new growth over an extended period

Keep the bag closed while assessing it.


The substrate is only partly colonised

A complete kit should normally be fully colonised before fruiting.

Fruiting too early may lead to:

  • A weak first crop
  • Small mushrooms
  • Uncolonised substrate
  • A block that dries unevenly
  • Greater opportunity for competing organisms to grow

Do not begin fruiting simply because a certain number of days has passed.

Use the visual indicators in the species-specific instructions.

A healthy colonised block normally becomes:

  • Firm
  • Bound together
  • Covered or permeated by healthy mycelium
  • Increasingly resistant to falling apart

Shiitake is an important exception because becoming fully white is not the final stage. It must normally continue maturing and browning before fruiting. Cornell recommends waiting until most of a Shiitake block has popcorned and approximately three quarters has browned.


Mushrooms are forming before the bag is fully colonised

Premature fruiting may be triggered by:

  • A sudden temperature drop
  • Physical disturbance
  • Light and air reaching an internal gap
  • A mature section of the substrate
  • Excess air space inside the bag
  • Species-specific behaviour

This is particularly relevant to Shiitake, which can respond to physical shock and temperature changes.

What to do

Do not immediately remove all the plastic.

Take photographs showing:

  • The entire bag
  • The fruiting area
  • The colonised and uncolonised sections
  • The injection port
  • The filter patch

Contact support for product-specific instructions.

The correct response depends on how much of the substrate has colonised and where the mushrooms are forming.


Normal growth or contamination?

One of the most common beginner concerns is distinguishing healthy mycelium from contamination.

Photographs are far more useful than a written colour description alone.

Healthy mushroom mycelium

Healthy mycelium is commonly:

  • White
  • Cream
  • Thread-like
  • Cotton-like
  • Dense
  • Root-like
  • Spread through the grain or substrate

Its exact appearance varies by species.

Oyster mushroom mycelium may become thick and bright white.

Lion’s Mane mycelium can initially appear finer or less visually dense.

Shiitake mycelium changes considerably during maturation and eventually develops a brown outer surface.


White fluffy growth

White fluffy growth may be healthy mycelium.

Do not assume that every irregular white patch is mould.

Look at:

  • Where it began
  • How it is spreading
  • Whether it connects with existing mycelium
  • Whether the bag smells normal
  • Whether unusual colours appear later
  • Whether the substrate is becoming colonised

When uncertain, keep the bag sealed and send photographs.


Amber or yellow droplets

Small yellow, amber or brown droplets may be mushroom metabolites.

These can appear when the mycelium is:

  • Growing actively
  • Maturing
  • Responding to environmental stress
  • Interacting with the substrate
  • Experiencing temperature fluctuations

A small amount does not automatically mean contamination.

Assess the complete grow.

Warning signs include:

  • Strong unpleasant smell
  • Slimy substrate
  • Spreading coloured growth
  • Large stagnant pools
  • No healthy progression

Blue or blue-green marks after handling

Some mushroom mycelium can bruise after pressure or mixing.

Bruising tends to remain associated with previously handled or compressed areas rather than spreading rapidly through uncolonised substrate.

However, colour alone is not enough to diagnose the problem.

When a blue-green area expands, becomes powdery or changes rapidly, isolate the bag and contact support.


Green mould

Green growth commonly indicates a competing mould.

Possible contributing factors include:

  • Contamination during inoculation
  • A damaged bag
  • Dirty equipment
  • Excess moisture
  • Slow mushroom colonisation
  • A compromised injection port
  • Opening the bag prematurely

Do not open a heavily contaminated bag inside your home or near healthy mushroom grows.

Keep it sealed, isolate it and take photographs. The Mushroom Lab’s cultivation guidance similarly recommends moving heavily contaminated material away from healthy grows rather than opening it indoors.


Black growth

Black growth is not a normal sign of healthy gourmet mushroom colonisation.

Keep the bag closed and move it away from other grows.

Do not attempt to scrape away contamination through the plastic or open the bag to smell it closely.

Contact support with clear photographs.


Pink or orange growth

Do not confuse a coloured mushroom species with coloured contamination.

Pink Oyster mycelium is still generally pale during colonisation. The vivid pink colour belongs to the mature fruiting bodies.

Unusual pink, orange or red areas spreading through an uncolonised bag should be photographed and assessed before the bag is opened.


Sour or rotten smell

A sealed healthy bag should not produce a strong sour, fermented or rotten odour.

Possible warning signs include:

  • Sour smell
  • Rotten smell
  • Fermented odour
  • Slimy grain
  • Excess liquid
  • Soft uncolonised areas
  • Stalled mushroom mycelium

Keep the bag sealed and contact support.

Do not consume mushrooms produced from a block that appears badly contaminated or has a strong unpleasant smell.


Ready-to-fruit mushroom block not growing

No pins are forming

A ready-to-fruit block does not always produce pins immediately after opening.

The block needs time to respond to its new environment.

Check:

  • Was the opening made according to the instructions?
  • Is the block receiving indirect light?
  • Is the room within the species’ preferred temperature range?
  • Is the fruiting surface drying?
  • Is the block sealed inside stagnant air?
  • Is the block exposed to a radiator or direct sunlight?
  • Is the plastic pressed tightly against the fruiting surface?
  • Has enough time passed?

What to do

  • Keep the block in a stable location
  • Maintain humidity according to the instructions
  • Allow normal fresh-air exchange
  • Provide indirect room light
  • Avoid creating additional openings
  • Avoid soaking the block unless instructed
  • Check it daily without repeatedly moving it

A suitable fruiting environment requires temperature, humidity, light and airflow to remain balanced.


The surface around the opening looks dry

Dry substrate may indicate:

  • Low room humidity
  • Direct airflow
  • Central heating
  • A nearby radiator
  • Strong sunlight
  • Excessively large cuts
  • Overventilation
  • Insufficient misting

Move the block away from the drying source before dramatically increasing the amount of water applied.

The goal is to maintain humid air around the fruiting opening, not saturate the substrate with repeated heavy spraying.


The block is very wet

Excessive moisture can create:

  • Standing water
  • Slimy surfaces
  • Damaged pins
  • Poor oxygen movement
  • Unpleasant smells
  • Bacterial problems

Reduce direct spraying.

Allow gentle fresh-air exchange and remove standing water from any tray or enclosure.

Do not place the block in an airtight container simply to increase humidity.


Water is collecting on top of Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane should normally fruit from the side of the block rather than from an open surface where water can collect.

Cornell specifically recommends side-fruiting Lion’s Mane because top-fruiting can retain water and encourage disease around the developing mushroom.

Follow the cutting method supplied with the kit.

Do not remove the entire top of the bag unless the instructions specifically direct you to do so.


Mushrooms are growing under the plastic

Mushroom pins sometimes form beneath the bag when a small pocket of air develops between the plastic and substrate.

Possible causes include:

  • Air trapped inside the bag
  • Light reaching the side of the block
  • Suitable humidity beneath the plastic
  • The block choosing an unintended fruiting point
  • Delayed opening

Do not automatically remove the entire plastic bag.

The plastic helps retain moisture and direct growth towards the intended opening.

Take photographs and follow the product-specific instructions.


Mushrooms are growing from the filter patch

This can happen when:

  • The block becomes ready to fruit before the intended opening is made
  • Air reaches the substrate near the patch
  • Internal fruiting conditions develop
  • The block is stored for too long
  • Temperature changes trigger fruiting

Do not cut around the filter patch without guidance.

Contact support and provide a photograph showing the complete block.


Mushroom pins appeared but stopped growing

Pins are the small early mushroom structures that develop before the full fruiting body.

Not every pin becomes a mature mushroom.

A block may naturally create more pins than it can support.

However, widespread pin failure may be associated with:

  • Low humidity
  • Dry airflow
  • Direct sunlight
  • Strong temperature changes
  • Low block moisture
  • Excessive handling
  • Heavy direct spraying
  • Insufficient fresh air
  • An immature block

Signs that pins have aborted

Aborted pins may:

  • Stop increasing in size
  • Become darker
  • Become dry
  • Shrink
  • Remain small while other mushrooms develop
  • Turn soft or discoloured

A few aborted pins are normal.

Focus on stabilising conditions for the pins that remain healthy.


How to help healthy pins continue developing

  • Keep the temperature stable
  • Protect the grow from direct heating
  • Maintain humidity
  • Avoid spraying pins heavily
  • Allow fresh-air exchange
  • Avoid touching the pins
  • Do not move the block repeatedly
  • Leave enough space around the fruiting opening

Do not peel away additional plastic simply because a few pins stopped growing.


Oyster mushroom grow-kit problems

Oyster mushrooms have long stems and small caps

This is one of the clearest signs of insufficient fresh-air exchange.

Oyster mushrooms use oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

When the fruiting area is too enclosed, carbon dioxide accumulates around the cluster.

The mushrooms may develop:

  • Long stems
  • Small caps
  • Narrow clusters
  • Stretched growth
  • Pale mushrooms

How to fix it

  • Ventilate the humidity tent more frequently
  • Move the grow out of a closed cupboard
  • Increase normal room airflow
  • Leave more open space around the fruiting side
  • Avoid surrounding the kit with tall solid objects

Do not place a powerful fan directly in front of the mushrooms.

Strong airflow can solve the carbon dioxide problem while creating a new humidity problem by drying the cluster. The intended balance is gentle air replacement rather than constant wind.


Oyster mushroom caps are curling upwards

Oyster mushroom caps naturally flatten as they mature.

Heavily upturned edges may mean:

  • The mushrooms are ready or slightly late for harvest
  • The cluster is becoming overmature
  • The environment is dry
  • The fruiting temperature is high
  • The mushrooms have begun releasing spores

Harvest timing should be judged daily once the caps begin expanding.

Do not leave a mature cluster on the block solely to obtain a few extra grams.


Oyster mushrooms are pale

Cap colour can change according to:

  • Species
  • Strain
  • Temperature
  • Light
  • Maturity
  • Growing conditions

Blue Oyster caps often appear more strongly blue when young and can become greyer as they expand.

Pink and Golden Oyster mushrooms may also become paler as they mature.

Assess shape, texture and growth rather than colour alone.


Oyster mushrooms are dry or cracked

Likely causes include:

  • Low humidity
  • Central heating
  • Direct airflow
  • Strong sunlight
  • Excess heat
  • The fruiting opening being too exposed

Move the grow away from the drying source.

Support humidity while maintaining fresh-air exchange.


Oyster mushrooms are wet or slimy

Likely causes include:

  • Heavy direct misting
  • Water trapped between caps
  • Poor ventilation
  • Standing water
  • Overmature mushrooms
  • Deterioration

Reduce direct spraying and increase gentle airflow.

Harvest mature mushrooms promptly.


The Oyster cluster is growing sideways

This is not automatically a problem.

Mushrooms grow towards:

  • Available space
  • Light
  • Fresh air
  • The main opening

Leave enough room around the fruiting side.

Avoid rotating the box every day because this can encourage an uneven cluster.


Lion’s Mane grow-kit problems

Lion’s Mane looks like coral

Branching or coral-like Lion’s Mane growth commonly indicates insufficient fresh-air exchange.

Instead of producing a dense rounded fruiting body with hanging teeth, it may form:

  • Branches
  • Antler-like structures
  • Loose coral growth
  • Puffy irregular lobes
  • Short teeth

How to improve it

  • Increase gentle ventilation
  • Open the humidity enclosure more frequently
  • Move it out of a closed cupboard
  • Keep nearby space clear
  • Maintain humidity while improving airflow

Do not direct a fan at the mushroom.


Lion’s Mane is not developing teeth

Possible reasons include:

  • The fruiting body is still young
  • Fresh air is insufficient
  • Temperature is unsuitable
  • Humidity is low
  • The mushroom is developing slowly
  • The block was fruited before full readiness

Give the mushroom time while maintaining stable conditions.

Healthy teeth often lengthen as the fruiting body approaches harvest.


Lion’s Mane is turning yellow

Light cream colouring can occur as Lion’s Mane matures.

Stronger yellowing may be linked to:

  • Age
  • Dryness
  • Warm conditions
  • Direct airflow
  • Direct sunlight
  • Delayed harvesting
  • Water stress

If the fruiting body is full and has developed clear teeth, yellowing may indicate that harvest is approaching.

Do not leave mature Lion’s Mane growing indefinitely.


Lion’s Mane is pink

Some Lion’s Mane fruiting bodies can show a faint pink or peach tint while young or under particular growing conditions.

Assess:

  • Whether it is continuing to develop
  • Whether the structure looks healthy
  • Whether there is an unpleasant smell
  • Whether the colour is part of the mushroom or spreading through the substrate
  • Whether the fruiting body is drying

Send photographs when the colour appears unusual or continues intensifying.


Lion’s Mane has brown tips

Brown or dry tips may indicate:

  • Low humidity
  • Strong airflow
  • High heat
  • The mushroom becoming overmature
  • Physical damage

Improve humidity around the grow and protect it from direct drying airflow.

Harvest when the mushroom is mature rather than waiting for extensive browning.

Shiitake grow-kit problems

The Shiitake block is completely white but not fruiting

A fully white Shiitake block is not necessarily ready to fruit.

Shiitake requires an additional maturation stage after colonisation.

During this stage:

  • The surface becomes bumpy
  • Raised popcorn-like areas develop
  • White areas begin turning tan
  • The outer surface gradually becomes brown
  • The block becomes firmer

Cornell recommends waiting until most of the block has popcorned and roughly 75% has browned before fruiting.

Do not open the bag simply because the block has turned white.


The Shiitake block is not turning brown

Browning may take several weeks after full colonisation.

Possible reasons for slower browning include:

  • The block needs more time
  • Temperature is unsuitable
  • The block is pressed tightly against another surface
  • The bag is being moved repeatedly
  • Maturation is naturally slow
  • The strain behaves differently

Leave space around the bag and avoid unnecessary movement.

Use the block’s appearance rather than one fixed calendar date.


The Shiitake block is forming large white bumps

These may be normal popcorn-like maturation structures.

Healthy popcorning is generally:

  • Firm
  • White or cream
  • Attached to the block
  • Followed by gradual browning

Do not fruit immediately when the first bumps appear.

Allow the block to continue maturing according to the instructions.


Shiitake is fruiting inside the bag

Possible triggers include:

  • Sudden cooling
  • Physical shock
  • A mature block
  • Air pockets
  • Environmental changes

Take photographs before changing the bag.

The correct action depends on:

  • How brown the block is
  • Whether it is fully colonised
  • The location of the mushrooms
  • The condition of the substrate

King Oyster and Black Pearl problems

King Oyster stems are long and caps remain small

King Oyster naturally produces substantial stems, so a thick stem is not automatically a problem.

However, extremely stretched mushrooms with tiny caps may indicate:

  • High carbon dioxide
  • Insufficient light
  • Limited growing space
  • Unsuitable temperature

Increase gentle fresh-air exchange and make sure the mushrooms have room to develop.


King Oyster mushrooms are thin

Possible causes include:

  • Excess warmth
  • Insufficient block moisture
  • Too many competing pins
  • Poor fresh-air balance
  • Natural strain variation

Avoid making several environmental changes at once.

Photograph the mushrooms over two or three days to see whether the stems continue thickening.


Black Pearl mushrooms look more like Oyster mushrooms

Black Pearl King Oyster is a hybrid-style cultivated mushroom that combines clustered Oyster characteristics with thicker stems.

Its shape can vary according to:

  • Temperature
  • Fresh-air exchange
  • Humidity
  • Available space
  • Genetics

Some clusters will look more Oyster-like than others.


Mushroom fruiting conditions troubleshooting

Temperature is too low

Low temperatures can cause:

  • Slow colonisation
  • Delayed pinning
  • Slow fruit-body growth
  • Stalled warm-weather species

Pink and Golden Oyster generally prefer warmer conditions than Blue or Grey Oyster.

Use a thermometer beside the kit rather than relying solely on a thermostat elsewhere in the home.

Do not use intense direct heat.


Temperature is too high

High temperatures can cause:

  • Fast drying
  • Weak or thin growth

  • Large persistent water droplets
  • Standing water
  • Slimy mushrooms
  • Soft damaged tissue
  • Stale odours
  • Constantly wet surfaces

Improve ventilation and reduce direct spraying.

Humidity should be present in the air around the mushrooms rather than maintained by keeping the fruiting bodies permanently wet.


Fresh air is insufficient

Signs include:

  • Long Oyster stems
  • Small Oyster caps
  • Coral-like Lion’s Mane
  • Stretched growth
  • Loose fruiting bodies

Improve gentle air replacement.

Do not use a closed cupboard for fruiting.


There is too much airflow

Signs include:

  • Dry mushroom edges
  • Stalled pins
  • Cracking
  • Rapid moisture loss
  • Yellowing
  • A fruiting surface that dries shortly after misting

Move the kit away from:

  • Fans
  • Open windows
  • Air-conditioning vents
  • Radiators
  • Dehumidifiers

The kit receives direct sunlight

Direct sunlight can:

  • Heat the block
  • Dry the fruiting opening
  • Create temperature fluctuations
  • Damage young pins
  • Reduce humidity

Move it elsewhere within the bright room.

Indirect light is sufficient.


The kit is kept in darkness

Mycelium can colonise without bright light, but fruiting mushrooms generally benefit from indirect light.

Move the fruiting block into a normally lit room.

You do not need a powerful grow lamp.


A simple mushroom grow-kit rescue plan

When the kit appears unhealthy or has stopped progressing, use this order.

Step 1: Stop making changes

Do not immediately:

  • Cut extra holes
  • Remove the plastic
  • Soak the block
  • Move it beside a heater
  • Add large amounts of water
  • Mix the bag again
  • Spray household chemicals nearby

Step 2: Identify the stage

Is the kit:

  • Newly inoculated?
  • Colonising?
  • Recovering after mixing?
  • Fully colonised?
  • Maturing?
  • Pinning?
  • Fruiting?
  • Resting between flushes?

Step 3: Check the temperature

Measure close to the kit.

Compare it with the instructions for the selected species.

Step 4: Inspect for contamination

Look for:

  • Green growth
  • Black growth
  • Slime
  • Unusual liquid
  • Strong unpleasant smell
  • Rapidly spreading discolouration

Keep the bag sealed.

Step 5: Assess humidity and airflow

Ask:

  • Are the mushrooms drying?
  • Are they constantly wet?
  • Is the grow sealed inside a container?
  • Is a fan blowing against it?
  • Is it beside a radiator?
  • Is there enough normal room airflow?

Step 6: Take photographs

Photograph:

  • The complete kit
  • The front
  • The back
  • The affected area
  • The filter patch
  • The injection port
  • The fruiting opening
  • The surrounding location

Step 7: Make one adjustment

Change only the most likely cause.

For example:

  • Move away from a radiator
  • Increase ventilation
  • Support humidity
  • Move to a more suitable temperature
  • Allow more colonisation time

Step 8: Observe

Allow time for the grow to respond.

Mushroom mycelium does not always react immediately.


When should you contact The Mushroom Lab?

  • No mycelium appears after an extended period
  • Growth stops completely
  • Green or black growth develops
  • The bag smells sour or rotten
  • The bag arrives damaged
  • The injection port is compromised
  • The grow produces mushrooms inside the unopened bag
  • The ready-to-fruit block arrives in poor condition
  • You are unsure whether growth is normal
  • The kit fails after the instructions have been followed

The Mushroom Lab asks customers to send photographs so the growth stage and likely problem can be assessed. Current product guidance states that failed kits will be troubleshot and may qualify for replacement or refund when the instructions have been followed.

Provide:

  1. One photograph of the complete bag or block
  2. One close-up of the affected area
  3. One photograph of the injection port
  4. One photograph of the filter patch
  5. One photograph showing the fruiting opening
  6. One photograph of the surrounding growing location
  7. A photograph of the instructions or product label when the species is unclear

Include:

  • Order number
  • Mushroom species
  • Inoculation date
  • Mixing date
  • Fruiting date
  • Approximate room temperature
  • Where the kit has been kept
  • Any unusual smell
  • Changes already made

Do not open a suspected contaminated bag solely to obtain a clearer photograph.


How to prevent problems with your next grow

Read the complete instructions first

Understand the major stages before inoculating or opening the block.

Choose a species suited to your home

Choose:

  • Blue or Grey Oyster for cooler rooms
  • Pink or Golden Oyster for warmer rooms
  • Lion’s Mane for stable moderate conditions
  • Shiitake when you can allow a longer maturation period

Prepare a clean inoculation area

For complete kits:

  • Clean the surface
  • Wash and dry your hands
  • Close windows
  • Turn off nearby fans
  • Keep pets away
  • Wipe the injection port
  • Avoid touching sterile needle surfaces

Keep the bag sealed

Do not open the grow bag during colonisation.

Mix only when instructed

Do not mix repeatedly.

Avoid direct heating

Stable room temperature is safer than intense local heat.

Keep photographs

Take a photograph every few days.

This makes changes easier to recognise and gives support a useful timeline.

Plan the fruiting location

Before mushrooms appear, choose somewhere with:

  • Indirect light
  • Normal room airflow
  • Suitable temperature
  • No radiator
  • No direct sunlight
  • Enough room for the cluster

Check developing mushrooms daily

Oyster mushrooms can change significantly over a short period once pins have formed.

Daily checks help prevent late harvesting.


Frequently asked questions

Why is my mushroom grow kit not growing?

The kit may still be in an early stage, the temperature may be unsuitable, the mycelium may be recovering after mixing or the block may need different fruiting conditions.

Inspect the growth stage before changing anything.

How long should a mushroom kit take to show growth?

The timeline varies by species, culture and temperature.

Visible mycelium may take several days or longer to appear after inoculation.

Why is there no mycelium after injection?

Possible explanations include slow establishment, low temperature, culture distribution or a culture problem.

Keep the bag sealed, stable and within the recommended conditions.

Why did my mycelium disappear after mixing?

The mycelium was broken into smaller pieces and distributed throughout the substrate.

It should gradually become visible again as it recovers.

Should I mix the grow bag again?

Only mix according to the instructions.

Repeated mixing can slow recovery.

Is white fluffy growth mould?

Not necessarily.

Healthy mushroom mycelium can be white, fluffy, thread-like or cotton-like.

Assess its location, progression, smell and relationship with the existing mycelium.

Is green growth normal?

Green growth commonly indicates competing mould.

Keep the bag closed, isolate it and contact support.

Should I open the bag to smell it?

No.

Keep suspected contamination sealed.

Why are there yellow droplets in the bag?

Small yellow or amber droplets may be mushroom metabolites.

Monitor the complete appearance and smell of the bag.

Why is my block fully white but not producing mushrooms?

It may not yet have received suitable fruiting conditions.

A Shiitake block may also require several additional weeks of maturation and browning.

Why will my ready-to-fruit kit not pin?

Check the fruiting opening, temperature, humidity, indirect light, fresh-air exchange and block condition.

Why did my pins stop growing?

Pins may dry out, abort naturally or stop after environmental stress.

Maintain stable humidity, temperature and airflow.

Why are my Oyster mushrooms long and thin?

They most likely need more fresh-air exchange.

Why are my Oyster mushroom caps small?

Small caps with long stems commonly indicate high carbon dioxide and insufficient ventilation.

Why does my Lion’s Mane look like coral?

Lion’s Mane commonly becomes branched or coral-like when it needs more fresh air.

Why is my Lion’s Mane yellow?

It may be mature, dry, warm or exposed to direct airflow.

Check whether the teeth are developed and whether harvest is due.

Why is my Shiitake block turning brown?

Browning is a normal part of Shiitake maturation.

Why is my Shiitake not turning brown?

It may need more time and stable maturation conditions.

Why are mushrooms forming inside the bag?

The block may have encountered an internal air pocket, temperature change or premature fruiting trigger.

Take photographs and contact support before removing all the plastic.

Should I cut more holes?

Not unless the instructions or support team tell you to.

Additional cuts can cause moisture loss and unwanted fruiting points.

Should I soak a block that is not growing?

Only soak when the product instructions direct you to do so, usually between flushes.

Should I place the kit beside a radiator?

No.

Direct heat can dry and overheat the block.

Does the kit need direct sunlight?

No.

Indirect room light is sufficient during fruiting.

Does the kit need complete darkness?

Complete darkness is not normally required.

Fruiting mushrooms benefit from indirect light.

Can a small first harvest be followed by a bigger second harvest?

Yes.

A modest first flush does not necessarily mean the block has finished producing.

What should I do after the first flush?

Harvest cleanly, remove loose mushroom material, rest and rehydrate the block according to the instructions, then return it to suitable fruiting conditions.

Can a contaminated block be saved?

Do not attempt to open and manually remove heavy contamination indoors.

Keep it sealed, isolate it and contact support.


Diagnose the stage before treating the problem

When a mushroom grow kit appears to stop growing, avoid assuming that it has failed.

The most important questions are:

  • What species is it?
  • Is it complete or ready-to-fruit?
  • What stage has it reached?
  • How long has it been at that stage?
  • What is the temperature beside the kit?
  • Is the fruiting surface dry or wet?
  • Does it receive normal fresh air?
  • Is it exposed to heat or sunlight?
  • Are there genuine signs of contamination?
  • Has anything recently changed?

Many apparent problems are normal stages:

  • Mycelium disappearing after mixing
  • Slow early growth
  • Shiitake popcorning
  • Shiitake browning
  • A few aborted pins
  • Oyster colour becoming paler
  • Lion’s Mane beginning as a small white lump
  • Later flushes taking longer

Make one careful adjustment at a time.

Keep suspected contamination sealed.

Take clear photographs before changing the product.
